Creating better presentations - the 20x20 PechaKucha format

Creating amazing slides for your presentation is hard work. Adding slides, removing them, adding pictures, etc, can take hours to put together and result in a 20-minute presentation, which means people will start yawning by the end of it. It can be a complete disaster.

Then, I discovered a method called PechaKucha.

Not only is it a fun name, I also find it’s an entertaining format for presentations that will help you deliver your content effectively and quickly whilst engaging your audience.

PechaKucha is a 20 images x 20 seconds format, which translates to 6 minutes and 40 seconds of a presentation. The format was invented for designers and architects, or people whose presentations take quite a bit of time; now it’s used universally, from students to marketers.

Architects Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham started to notice that their colleagues talked too much during their presentations, so they decided to invent this restrictive format. This inspired a special event, hosted in small venues, called a PechaKucha Night. The aim was to share ideas, pictures and projects in ordinary places.

People are really bad at remembering text-based information and that’s why images are a key element to the PechaKucha method. In one slide ​and 20 seconds, say what this slide means to you, then move straight to the next slide, making sure to connect with a picture whilst telling your story. Images are becoming more powerful for sharing ideas in order to reach target audiences, just take a look at Instagram, which has over 400 million users who share more than 70 million photos and videos each day.

According to Wired magazine, Pechakucha is about saying what you need to say and then sitting the hell down. That’s it.

It may seem like a dream to build a timely and engaging visual presentation, but maybe you’ve just been waiting for the right format and it just might be PechaKucha.
